“Oh no! Not again” Exasperated he woke up to find the fan switched off – yet again. “Come on start, I am sweating here. Start and go full gallop“, he urged the fan to start on its own accord. After all it had been switching itself off for the past few weeks. When five minutes of psychokinesis proved futile, he lumbered out of the bed, switched it on and crashed on the bed again.
“Seems the fan has a brain. It is doubling up as an alarm clock, waking me up everyday around 8:00. So damn early!” he cursed the fan. It was baffling, for the past few days whenever he woke up he found the fan idle, even though it would be in top gear the previous night. “Must be my roomies“, was his first and only sane thought. But his roommates vehemently denied the accusation and he concurred, “Who would disturb his blissful sleep to disturb me?” The rest of not-so-sane thoughts followed, “Must be the effect of cemetery on the other side of the road“, “I am sleep-walking“, “My room-mates are sleep-walking“, “My fan has a soul and a brain“, “Ghost attack!”
“Mystifying“, he thought and the Sherlock in him stirred. He recounted all the sleuthing funda he had read about, and decided to try them out. He collected tools of the trade – a thermos full of steaming coffee and a flashlight – and set out to spend the night in vigil of the miscreant. He had no clue, no leads; he just waited for the culprit.
12:05 a.m. – “This would be a fun night!”
“Hmmm 1:00 a.m. Let me have a cup of coffee”
“It’s just 1:45! Sleuthing is boring”
“2:25!! I thought it would be at least 4:00. Let me have just another cup of coffee”
2:50 a.m. – “When did I drink so much coffee? I should have made more”
2:55 a.m. – “I’ll take a nap, just a short one. Let me set the alarm to 3:15”
3:00 a.m. – “Now where is this darned alarm clock. This spooky fan has not allowed me to use my alarm for weeks now! Ah, there it is”
7:00 a.m. – “Shit! I overslept. Whew! The fan is still on”
7:15 a.m. – “Let me get inside the quilt, I’ll keep peeping and surprise the ghost”
7:16 a.m. – “It’s broad daylight! Are the ghosts being paid overtime or not?”
7:45 a.m. DING-DONG “Who would be at the door at this ungodly hour? Oh! I did not know the maid comes so early.”
7:50 a.m. – “Any minute now. Hey, how will I catch the ghost? Can I tie a ghost with a rope?”
7:53 a.m. – “Hope the ghost is peaceful and does nothing to me”
7:55 a.m.: The maid enters the room to sweep it and switches off the fan…
he he he …

very nice post
hihihi :)) nice. Btw you seem to have spent a lot of time over the formatting punctuation font direct speech etc etc 🙂 gg
Thanks all.
Yeah Sreejith, I did spend some time over the formatting… 🙂
awesome …
This is the best short story i ever read. The emotions are really brought up well and adjectives are very wisely used for the effects. Some nice sound effects would have made it even more delicious.
Atta Boy !! Good Going.
