Predictions: ICC Cricket World Cup 2007

Time to stick my neck out. Some of my predictions for the World Cup:

Semi-Finalists: India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies
South Africa because they are on a high, Sri Lanka because that is the team in form, West Indies because they have a major advantage of knowing all pitch conditions, and India because we are the best. No Australia because they are an aged, injured team.

Best Batsman in the Series: Kumar Sangakkara
Conditions similar to Sri Lanka and he is a class batsman.

Best Batsman for India: Sachin Tendulkar
Because he is God.

Best Bowler in the Series: Shane Bond
No one is as lethal as him these days.

Best Bowler for India: Ajit Agarkar
His skiddy bowling would work really well in West Indian pitches, and he is a wicket taker.

Upset of the Tournament: Kenya defeating England

Winners: India!

Time will tell if I can claim to be Nostradamus πŸ˜›

  3. 3 fuzzy March 7, 2007 at 4:21 am

we already have Bangladesh beating New Zealand.
yesterday we had SA almost losing to Ireland.
let’s hope there are more upsets (excluding India of course :D)

  4. 4 Karan March 7, 2007 at 5:56 am

i’ll go for australia, sa, india and nz as semi finalisists

  5. 5 Kunal March 7, 2007 at 10:47 am

Himank, even I hope so πŸ™‚

rama, nice play with words πŸ˜€

fuzzy, upsets do liven up the tournament, but I agree – no upsets involving India πŸ™‚

Karan, I have chosen the semi-finalists thinking that the pitch would be on the sluggish side – with no proper bounce.. thats why I kept out Aus & NZ … lets see how the drama unfolds…

  6. 6 Asheesh March 7, 2007 at 3:09 pm

As far as I think this would be a world cuo dominated by slower bowlers …and matches would be decide by the way a team plays between 15th and 35th over ..
and yes Sachin is going to be the best for India ..bec of obvious reasons πŸ™‚ .. .. other players to watch out
    would be hussey and hayden

pakistan could prove to be a handful in these conditions ..so watch out for them ..

Hum Honge Kamyaab, Hum honge kamyaab, Is baar.

  8. 8 aniketsharma March 7, 2007 at 4:14 pm

I’d put my chances on India(for obvious reasons), WI(home team), Australia(aged and injured aside, they’re EXPERIENCED warhorses), and someone from S/L, Pakistan, N/Z…That’s my guess.
    CHEERS TO INDIA!!

  9. 9 manoj March 7, 2007 at 10:39 pm

I think Aus,Ind,SA n WI will make it to semis after which SA will live up to their tag of chokers.
pakistan don hav their premier fast bowlers which is their greatest weakness.they depend entirely on inzy as the strike rates of 2

  10. 10 manoj March 7, 2007 at 10:41 pm

I think Aus,Ind,SA n WI will make it to semis after which SA will live up to their tag of chokers.
pakistan don hav their premier fast bowlers which is their greatest weakness.they depend entirely on inzy as the strike rates of 2 Y`s is not that high.SL is clearly out of form in india series.. though vaas n murali joined the squad, i think it will be tuff fr them.Eng n NZ though they defeated AUS dont have the players who can make the best of the WI conditions.

  11. 11 summu March 7, 2007 at 11:51 pm

We just bought an online package for $200 to watch cricket πŸ˜‰ Just hope India goes as far as possible. Ofcourse, winning the WC would be the best thing to happen !!! πŸ™‚

  12. 12 Kunal March 8, 2007 at 11:57 am

Asheesh, you are right that the slower bowlers would dominate the cup.. When India hosted the WC, first 15 overs dominated.. now it would be really different.. and I would not put my money on Hussey/Hayden – they are not that good players on slower pitches.. and yeah pakistan is certainly the most unpredictable πŸ™‚

    Rakesh, yeah dude πŸ˜€

aniket, dude you practically took names of all teams.. why did you leave out SA πŸ˜›

manoj, lets see how it happens ….

sumanth, lets hope you are able to utilize your $200… hope you see India lifting the trophy πŸ˜€

March 24th: Australia Vs South Africa: A much awaited match. The toss was won by Australia and electing to bat. They fail to deliver with a major crash in the batting line up. Gibbs finishes of the match in style. Match summary: Australia: 146/10 in 37 overs.

I THINK INDIA WILL WILL WORLD CUP .
I HOPE AUSIS AND INDIA AGAIN IN WORLD CUP FINALS.
SAME STORY REPEAT HOST TEAM WILL NOT WIN THE WORLD CUP.

  20. 20 Issac March 14, 2007 at 9:27 am

Well it was just a prediction based on the stabilities of the team. The westindians fought well and pakistanis who ver expected to win the match suffered a blow.Infact it was a cake walk for the west indians..

The pakistanis had to capitalise on the westindian weekness..
    1) The west Indians lost the practice match against India and morally they were down.
    2) Being the home ground they had the pressure to perform and win the match.

Pakistanis had nothn to loose yesterday. The turning point of the match were the wickets of Inzi and Yousuf youhana..After the fall of Younis khan the two most experinced players in the pakistani side continued making runs at snails pace..And the west indians taking advantage of that quickly bowled almost 13 overs….It was very late when the pakistani captain realised that he was in the line of fire…
The west indians played no extraordinary game..They played cricket the way it is to be played..Stuck to the basics, bowled in line and length and fielding was splendid…Thats the mantra of winning a match in the Caribbeans…
    Three cheers to West Indians….

This is just an example that could prove that any predictions can be a failure..

  21. 21 Mrudang Mathuria March 14, 2007 at 1:30 pm

    HEY!!!!!!!!!!
    MRUDANG MATHURIA HERE…

I WAS RIGHT WITH MY PREDICTION ABOVE “MADE ON 13TH MARCH 12:30 PM”
THAT WEST INDIES WUD WIN..THEY WON THE GAME!

MANY WERE AGAINST MY PREDICTION AS PAKISTANI’S WERE ALL IN FORM WHEREAS WI WERE TOTALLY OUT OF FORM..

I WUD LIKE TO ASK ISAAC & WUD LOVE TO KNOW,,,THE “BASIS” OF THE AMAAAZINN ANALYSIS HE HAS MADE ABOVE!
HEY MAN….GOOD WORK…CAN U TELL ME THE “ELEMENT – ANALYTIC SUBJECTS ” OF UR ABOVE PREDICTION…PLZ?

  22. 22 VIRANTHA March 15, 2007 at 12:58 pm

I THINK AUSTRALIA,SOUTH AFRICA,SRILANKA & INDIA HAVE MORE CHANCE TO WIN THE WORLD CUP. I THINK AUSTRALIA WOULD HAVE TO FACE A VERY TOUGH COMPETITION TO PROTECT THEIR CROWN ESPESCIALLY FROM SRILANKA & SOUTH AFRICA AS THEY ARE VERY AGRESSIVE AND CAN MAKE A REVOLUTION AT ANY MOMENT WHAT EVER, IT IS VERY HARD TO TELL WHO WOULD TAKE THE WORLD CUP WE CAN ONLY WAIT AND WATCH!

  23. 23 anshuman bhat March 16, 2007 at 6:36 pm

well friends it will be a tough contest for all the
the 16 teams but still i feel that the two favourites to win this nworld cup are india and australia i would like to see both of these teams in the
grand finale of this extragvanza but the key teams to watch out are of course pakistan
& west indies, so my best wishes are with the men in blue and i would like them to repeat the 1983 feat

  24. 24 Kevin March 17, 2007 at 7:41 am

Yes! Strangely enough, i predict the same semifinalist .. Strongly believe Australia wont be in the final .. and India and South Africa will make sure it happens .. how ever its an India/Sri lanka WC Final .. My gut says India .. but my wishes are with Sri lanka, yes!! another 1996 feat..

Either way world cup 2007 belongs in the Subcontinent.

  25. 25 Rakesh March 18, 2007 at 12:37 pm

well .. after last day’s match.. I say bangladesh and ireland into finals and Bangladesh taking away the world cup πŸ˜‰

  26. 26 Ravi March 18, 2007 at 9:48 pm

One day ricket is all about interesting twists and esp, in World Cup. Now we have Bangladesh Winning India and Ireland beating Pakistan.

Either blame it on the pitches or that the minnows have taken over long time champions, World cup 2007 seems to hold more such turns in the coming days.

BTW, do check my blog for my version of the predictions.

  27. 27 Issac March 20, 2007 at 4:31 pm

That was big blow on my predictions, as 1) India lost its opener against Bangladesh..2) Pakistan loosing to Westindies and out of world cup 3) England loosing to Newzealand.
What went wrong..Of course Indian batting order looks good and they performed well against Bermuda..But the question is how did they loose to Bangladesh…

All my predictions were based on simple analysis by rating the team to its over all stability..

    The parameters include
    1) Depth In batting
    a) Openers
    b) The pivot
    c) The stabilizer
    d) Finisher
And to add up to this is the experience, the number of years the batsman has played in that order.
Considering it the top 4 teams would be.

    1) Australia
    2) South Africa & India
    3) Srilanka

And to consider the bowling wing…
Ders only 2 good team to compete thats South Africa and Australia..India and the rest of the teams are under dogs in the bowling department..

Fielding is quiet good with the top 8 teams..With Australia and south Africa again having an edge

When u overall rate the team and predict various situations in setting scores, playing under pressure, chasing small and huge targets ..The best 4 teams would be..
    South Africa
    Australia
    India
    Srilanka..

Now New Zealand and Westindies will win all the three matches in the league and will top the tables in the super 8’s with three wins…
South Africa or Australia will have a similar chance..And srilanka also have a chance to top the table leaving India out of the world cup…

Lets hope for the best that India will win the match against Srilanka and go to the Super 8’s..
Srilanka is my second most favorite team followed by Pakistan…

They should have been a part of the world cup..I miss Pakistan…

  28. 28 randy March 28, 2007 at 10:59 am

Well Guys Sadly India went home

    so It will undoubtedly be

    Sri lanka

looking back @ the past WC; only Srilanka were able to create an upset against the Aussies in a finale. In 1996 Srilanka made it but Pakistan failed in 1999.Then again in 2003 India couldnt deliver what was expected from an asian cricketing giant. So since India and Pakistan are out of the picture,it’s definetly going to be the Srilankans who could once again create that major upset.
    My semi Finalists are,
    Srilanka/Australia
    South Africa/New Zealand

  29. 29 kiwi April 4, 2007 at 3:57 am

Just stumbled upon this website, nice predictions!!!!!
Fair to say that india failed miserably…
Aus are rock solid as usual, SA are doing well, and NZ could still pull some upsets..
I think Aus will probably take it but not without a damn good fight from a few other teams.

  30. 30 kiwi rua April 7, 2007 at 1:43 pm

I just stumbled onto this site myself and find some of these predictions funny as!, sorry guys but underestimate us kiwis at your peril. None of you rubbished the Blackcaps but neither did you rate them. Australia definately look good (Haydens on fire), Sri Lanka also very dangerous (Malingas out of this world)and South Africas good enough to be there but good old New Zealand, they have the most destructive bowler in the world in Bond with world class support, a batting order deeper than anyone elses and arguably the best captain in world cricket so i for one are publicly backing them all the way.
My final order is NZ bt Aus in the final
and Sth Af bt Sri L for 3/4.

  31. 31 ben April 7, 2007 at 4:21 pm

australlia rules and we are going to win the rest cant bat

  32. 32 Jeeverz April 22, 2007 at 11:50 pm

i really hope Australia loses to South Africa… australia are just being cocky as hell … F ricky pointing

I predict Sri Lanka Vs. Australia in the final … but i wished we faced SA instead…

  33. 33 Bassman April 23, 2007 at 9:21 pm

It’s not being cocky when we really are that good. Australia for the Cup! lol
The 4 teams who have made the semi’s are the 4 teams that to deserve to be there. I think that the overall depth and level of talent prevalent within the New Zealand side are a big threat heading into the finals, as are the somewhat unpredictable natures of the Sri lankan side. Odds on for SA to Choke tho. They seem to lose their nerve coming into the business end of a world cup. Should be some tip top cricket coming up in any case, WOOOO.

We may be old and injured, but we’re still kickin some butt!

AUSSIE! AUSSIE! AUSSIE! OI! OI! OI!

  34. 34 Ramesh April 25, 2007 at 1:20 pm

South Africa will take the cup

  35. 35 retro November 20, 2007 at 7:51 am
