Update:

The meaning of ‘Kunal‘ is ‘one with beautiful eyes‘ or ‘someone who sees beauty in everything‘. It used to mean ‘Lotus‘ in early Sanskrit, the word ‘Kunal’ was later on dropped from Sanskrit.

King Ashok named his son Kunal after a Himalayan bird which had beautiful eyes.

Subject: Your skills put to test.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I require your skills to resolve a matter that has been pestering me for ages, well almost 23 years to be precise. You would agree that your name is your identity. Your name is your calling card, literally.

My problem is thus, I do not know the meaning of my name - Kunal. I have asked everyone I know. No results. I went through online Hindi-dictionaries, I googled, I went through wikipedia, I even stopped being loyal to Google for a while and searched on Yahoo! too *shudders* You can imagine my frustration when I just keyed in my name on all Firefox-integrated-searches. Although I expected nothing of that futile exercise, but still I went through what was retrieved and I was astounded to find that three pictures have been made by my name! Finally! *sighs in relief* IMDb sheds some light on the darkness shrouding my name. I found that Kunal was the name of a son of Ashoka. But there the trail went cold. No more clues, nothing, zero, zilch, nada (ok, ok I’ll stop!)

So this is my appeal to you all. Help me in finding the meaning of my name!

P.S: As soon as I posted this, I found that the meaning of Kunal is ‘Lotus Flower’. At last! A search spanning 23 years is over!

Hi Kunal.
My name is also kunal and i also did the same search for my name like you did. But i went on to libraries along with web ..so got the following information…

Kunal is in sanskrit and was meant “lotus”.
It was only in early sanskrit, later kamal was more frequently used of lotus ! later it was dropped from the list of words that hindi inherits from sanskrit. So there is no word in hindi means kunal.

Also kunal is the name for a himalayan bird (himlayan sniper, if i remember it right) which has beautiful blue eyes. It was after seeing this bird, emperor ashok named his son as kunal (who later left the throne to become sage.)

Also, according to hindu mythology, there was the great devotee of vishnu whose name was kunal. There is the place in uttranchanl, india called “kunal pathri” where he summon vishnu just on his own will of devotion hence proving devotee is stronger than god itself.

So, thats the history of name kunal….

another addition to my last comment !!

you will not find kunal meaning as lotus in current sanskrit dictionaries. which implies that kunal word is dropped from sanskrit too..

but sanskrit dictionary still shows it as a kind of bird.

hey abhimanu- i read this article an went searching. I fouind out what abhay means and what manu means and stuck the deffinitions together to get “fearless man.” However, I don not know if thins is possible in Hindi, I’m just a high school student. I found your plea, for I have a friend named Kunal and wanted to know its meaing. Hope this helps, again I don’t really know much about Hindi and just did some basic research to get what i found. finally after a lucky meeting with sanskrit scholar at jaipur, my biggest misconception that kunal means lotus is resolved. There is no proof that kunal means lotus in sanskrit ! It means “Bird with beautiful eyes” Or “One with beautiful eyes” . Details on my blog.

Good work Kunal for all that research. I am considering kunal as one of the names for my soon-to-arrive baby and so was looking for its meaning.
It is interesting to know that the internet is not always correct - actually I have also seen different sites giving different meanings for the same name many times - but in today’s world people take it to be the final word.

PS: i think that all name dont need to have meanings but if there is one then you should know for sure what it means. but if there is nothing sure then i think its better to leave it at that.

Abhimanyu was a hero from the Mahabharata and Kuruksetra war yes, but the Pandavas winning the war had nothing to do with Abhimanyu although his sacrifice was valiant. The Pandavas won because they protected Virtue, so Dharma protected them. It was God’s will that they won, and to know that is knowledge.
Abhayam means fearless, and it is said in the Bhagavad Gita that only the fully surrendered souls are capable of fearlessness.
I do not know the meaning of Manyu but I suspect it has to do with Manu, the progenitor of Mankind, so I would agree with the previous statement of Abhimanyu meaning “fearless man”.
Abhimanyu, son of Arjuna and Subhadra sister of Krsna, contended at the age of 16 against 7 atirathas simultaneously. A maharatha was a warrior who could alone fight 10,000 men, and atiratha could fight limitless men because he could kill them faster than they could run to him. All of the 7, Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Karna, Ashvataama, Dushashana, and Duryodhana were atirathas. Abhimanyu’s charioteer advised him not to enter the enemy’s formation, the chakravyuha. Abhimanyu laughed and said “O charioteer, who is this Drona? Who indeed are all these ksatriyas supporting him? I would fight with Indra mounted on Airavata and attended by the immortals. How are these foes competant to fight a battle with even a 16th part of me? I, who have the world-conquering Vishnu as my uncle and the famous Arjuna as my father, will not quake with terror at the sight of any enemy within the 3 worlds. Drive on O Sumitra. Make straight for Drona.”
This was not battle lust or pride speaking but rather in the absence of his father, no one but he could break the chakravyuha formation. So he rose to the challenge for his elders depended upon him. Even though outnumbered, he did not retreat.
People talk about fame today but they have no idea what is fame. Bush will be forgotten in 50 years, and no one will remember Arnold Schwarzeneggar in 50 years. But 5300 years later the world remembers Abhimanyu for his valor, his fearlessnes, his duty, and his dedication as a servant of God.

Your name may be the same as “kunal” which with time was pronounced that way by certain area of people.

Just like british and american english is different.
